Captain's Log: Day 64 - Mile 1461.4

June 15, 2016

It was another slow morning due in part to the cloudy chill and anticipation of rain. We got started on trail a little after 6:30am and an on-and-off sprinkle had already started. The morning was mostly uneventful although we met 3 nobo hikers and also began to see what the trail crew north of Castella meant about I maintained trail. The trail was completely overgrown for long stretches. While it wasn't raining hard enough to get us wet, pushing our way through wet foliage had us sopping wet before the first mile.

We broke for lunch at a campground on the other side of our first ridge of the day. We lucked out and had actual sun for some of the meal! There were a few cars parked and a tent set up but we didn't see any people.

We had a 7 mile climb up to the first potential campsite. The sun continued coming and going and the miles passed quickly. I arrived at the site just before 3:00pm and checked the distance to the next listed campsite: 8.8 miles. We had been hiking along the sides of inclines all day and it was unlikely we would find a spot between here and the next site. It was a lot more uphill and with questionable weather it was uncertain if we would make it to the next one before rain / camp time (6:30pm).

Loopy and Rickets arrived half an hour later and both were in favor of staying put. So we did. Dinner came early followed by another group podcast listening session. Just before 6:00pm it started coming down again and we each retreated to our own tents.
